Tools I Use

This is a list of the tools that I use everyday in creating websites and blogs. If you want to be able to follow the lessons and advice on this site then it is highly recommended that you spend an hour downloading ALL of these tools before you get started. Most of them are free, but where I use something that costs money, such as a program or subscription, I will endeavour to also show you how the task can be done for free in the actual lesson or blog that I write about it.

Now I usually try to stick with “industry standard” tools - that means that I will recommend the tool most people use. Now I am sure there are other programs that are better or whatever, but I do this intentionally to reduce confusion and make it as easy as possible for people. The only exception is that I use Firefox Browser instead of Internet Explorer, though Firefox is fast becoming the standard.

Free, Disposable Email Address

You are going to need to give a lot of companies your email address. I keep an email address that I don’t care if it gets spammed etc. You should too. I use Yahoo!

Browsers

I use Firefox. It is the best. It is free. Get it here.

Toolbars

I use the Google Toolbar. It is free. It is very useful for what we do. It saves me time. Get it here.

Bookmarks

Put these sites in your browser’s bookmarks list for easy reference:

http://alexa.com

FTP Program

FTP stands for “File Transfer Protocol.” That geek-speak for the little program that allows you to take a program from your computer and send it to your web server (ie the computer where you actual website resides).

I use Core FTP LE and it is fine. Get it here for free.

Zip Program

Most programs you download from the internet are “zipped.” That means that they are compacted to make them smaller (and thus faster) to download. You need a program to “unzip” them and make them useable.

I use Winzip. It is very good. Get the trial version for free here.

Payments

If you are going to be spending time on the internet you are going to need an easy way to send and receive payments (people you use to do work for you etc).

I use PayPal.

I have to add to your Zip programs. Winzips is pretty average. You should use winrar. Just search in google it will come up.

Mostly I too prefer to use FIREFOX instead of IE mostly…but still sometimes i use IE too.

Google Toolbar is the must for SEO so no work option without Google Toolbar.
