SEO for Blogs

SEO for blogs is something that is pretty easy to forget about when you are posting so often. But if you take a little time to remember a few basic rules then you may be rewarded by a lot of extra search engine traffic.

You may think that getting to the top of search engines can be a bit of a drag. In some ways you would be right, but occassionally you will get a nice surprise - ie. one of the search engines will start sending you traffic for a keyword term that you didn’t even think of or intentionally optimise for. The rest of the time, it is a matter of forming the habit of following a few key rules. These rules won’t necessarily get you a top 10 spot in the search results, especially for competitive keywords, but they will increase your chances of being ranked well.

Always put your keywords in the title of your post. It may seem obvious but sometimes, when you are in a rush you will forget to do it (I know I have).

Put your keywords in the first four words of the first paragraph of your article. Having your keywords towards the beginning of your article will let the search engines know what the article is about and help you get a little extra search engine love for those keywords.

Put your keywords in bold somewhere in the article. Writing a story about SEO for Blogs means I would do something like this. Same thing with italics for writing a post about SEO for Blogs.

Link out to relevant sites using your keywords. For a post like this, linking to Blog SEO would probably be a good idea for example.

Don’t keyword stuff. In fact a keyword density of between 2 and 5% is regarded as about the norm. If you go too much over that, you will risk being penalised by the search engines.

Another thing that you should remember is that when linking to your own or other people’s posts, if you use the classic linking method of saying link here, you have wasted a valuable opportunity. The search engines take notice of the anchor text of internal links as well as external links. You should therefore use the keywords that you are trying to rank well for as the link to your internal stories and you should use relevant keywords to link to external sites in order to give them a hand to rank well for relevant keywords.

Getting well ranked for your search terms is a slightly hit and miss affair, but you will get a pleasant surprise every now and then if you remember these few tips on SEO for blogs.
