News Topics
Keeping up to date with news topics is something that most serious bloggers do anyway.
Breaking news is the essence of a lot of blogs and generating some ripples in the blogosphere is the only reason many people blog.
As far as making money, news blogs are a bit of a mixed bag. I am inherently lazy, so I find that keeping up to date with news in a niche can be a bit of a drag.
However, I do have a newsy type blog that I update sporadically. I break most of the rules about posting regularly, but it is more of a hobbie blog than a money making venture, so that’s never really been a real concern.
A few weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised.
I happened to write a post on a very new and hot topic. I wrote it because I was interested in it and the topic coincided with the general theme of my other blog so it was done more for fun than any intent to make money.
But, as always, I tried to abide by a few goos blog SEO principals for this news topic.
Well things all came together very well on that post. Because the topic was pretty new (like BRAND new), there was really no competition in the search engines. (Technorati is a great way to find these topics).
Within a few days my post was listed in Google under the keywords in the number three spot.
That single post has been bringing that blog between 500 and 1500 search engine visitors every day. I am therefore very happy with the results.
So what are the factors that contributed to this little bit of success?
- Sound SEO Principals
- Breaking News Content
- No Search Engine Competition
Breaking news content is possibly your best chance to dominate the search engines for very popular keywords. Everybody is starting from scratch with the search engines when a new topic becomes hot. The competition is therefore not established.
The other point I’d like to make, is that I write a lot of content accross my blogs. Creating as much content as possible increases the chances that one or two of your posts will get some serious search engine traffic.
I have been lucky enough to hit gold with a couple of search engine terms accross my blogs quite unintentionally. While I usually try to abide by good SEO principals, it is simply not possible to get every post to the top of the search engines. Therefore a little bit of luck comes into play. Increasing my output of content increases the chances that the luck will bring me some good results.
Keeping up with breaking news is a good way to give yourself a better than average chance of getting some search engine love.
