A Partner in Blogging

When you start getting ideas for blogs and becoming more exoerienced in researching them you will eventually come to a point when you think it could be time to take on a partner.

There are really a lot of reasons that these thoughts can start occurring.

For starters, it’s great to be able to bounce ideas off other people of the same mindset. It makes the ideas better and it can instill a sense of enthusiasm for a new project.

It can also be because you want to share out the workload of starting up a new blog or site - many hands makes light work, as they say. And as Performancing has shown us, having a dedicated team of bloggers who write a lot of good content really brings back the readers and can build a site as a hub of information on a topic a lot faster than one blogger could do it.

But there are also a few things you need to consider before you embark on a partnership in the blogosphere.

Experience - If your proposed blogging partner has no experience as a blogger or writer then it is very doubtful that they are going to be able to sustain a strict writing regimen for more than a few months. Sure, there are exceptions to that rule, but if you count on being the exception then you are probably going to be disappointed. Try to make sure that your proposed partner has a decent histroy of churning out decent content.

Skills - Writing is only one part of blogging. There are many other skills such as marketing and design that are also pretty important for a new blog. If you new partner has all of those skills, great! But that is unlikely so you need to assess what skills that they actually do bring to the mix. If their skills compliment your own skills, then that is the best scenario. If you are good at design and they can market a blog and you can both write then it should be a happy experience in sharing out the work load. Doing all of the work yourself in a “partnership” can be a bit of a drag so make sure you don’t end up in that situation.

Personality - Are you going to get along? There is nothing worse or more awkward than if you and a partner simply don’t like each other. And enthusiasm and friendship can quickly turn to boredom and resentment after the initial excitement of a new project has worn off. Try to be pretty sure that you can get along with somebody before you start a project with them.

Money - If you are going into the project with teh expectation of making a little cash, then sort everything out from the beginning. You need to organise who is entitled to which revenue and how much of it. You also need to agree on ways in which the revenue is going to flow. Nothing can drown a partnership faster than arguments over money and it can get ugly. So sort this one out right from the very beginning and you should be able to avoid the larger problems later on.

Entering into a new partnership can be a rewarding experience. Planning for it just increases the chances that everyone will be happy.
